Tracking the Growth of Mining Electric Vehicles

Welcome! The world of mining electric vehicles is growing quickly. We created this page to help keep track of the many new vehicles as they’re announced, trialed and ultimately enter the market.

We’re tracking several different types of energy storage system (ESS) under the “EV” banner:

1. BEVs: battery electric vehicles
2. Cable: tethered/cable-powered electric drive vehicles
3. FHEV*: hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid electric vehicles
4. HEV:* diesel-hybrid electric vehicles (e.g. trolley assist)

* FHEVs and HEVs are included since both of these options rely heavily on electric powertrain components (power electronics, AC motors & drives) and they are powered by electricity for at least part of their duty cycle. They support emissions reductions and we consider them stepping stones on the path to full electrification, so they’re worth tracking alongside the BEV models.

Surface Mining EVs

The table shows a snapshot of the announced and available electric vehicles targeted at surface mining applications.

Underground Mining EVs

The are significantly more EV models for underground mining. Here we’ve separated out the production equipment (LHDs, haul trucks, drills, rock support) and the utility equipment into two tables.

Along with utility equipment, we’re tracking service trucks and personnel carriers that are being used in mining operations worldwide.
